General Questions

1] What do you mean when you say you "try hard to use methods that preserve the integrity of the land?"

Preserving the integrity of the land means we use no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. We utilize crop rotation methods to avoid draining the land of its nutrients which in turns requires les in the way of fertilization.

We also work hard to be sure we aren't depleting the soil by erosion. We've discontinued our CSA Meat Program specifically because it was too hard on our land. By being able to further control the number of animals we allow to graze, we are ensuring the soil isn't eroding due to anything we have done. It's a commitment we are serious about.

2] How do you fertilize and control pests?
All fertilization comes from naturally composted materials from our farm. Pests are controlled by companion planting (planting crops strategically to reduce harmful insects and attract helpful insects that prey on pests) and by hand-picking them from plants. Weeding is also done by hand.

3] Doesn't this make farming more difficult?
Sure it does, but it's a labor of love. We are proud of what we do and how we do it. Our family doesn't want to ingest nasty chemicals and we've decided to offer our neighbors the same opportunity through our products.

4] Can I come visit your farm?
Of course! We love to have visitors come see the way we do things and learn where their food comes from. All we ask is that you email or call us to schedule a time so we're sure we're here, especially during our busiest season.

Product Questions

1] Why are your produce, meat and eggs sometimes more expensive than in the grocery store?
Unfortunately, our natural way of farming is not the most wide-spread form of farming. It takes more time and effort to produce the foods the way we do versus most commercially grown items. Our prices reflect the additional effort (and love!) put into producing our foods and what we see as a higher quality product. Click here for an article about that subject.

2] Does this mean your items are better than what's in the store?
We think so. We think foods produced without the use of chemicals and meat and eggs produced in a natural, stress-free setting without the use of antibiotics or hormones tastes better and are better for you. And there are lots of studies out there that agree with us!

3] You say your livestock doesn't receive any antibiotics or hormones. Does this mean you don't vaccinate for diseases?
No. We absolutely use carefully selected vaccinations for the prevention of diseases that would affect the health of our livestock or the public when we see it's necessary. These vaccinations do not pass through to the meat we sell. What we don't do is use antibiotics or hormones to increase weight gain, production or feed conversion ratios or administer blanket vaccines for any and all diseases "just in case." If an animal does get sick and requires antibiotics or other medications that could pass into the food product, they are no longer eligible to be used in our program.
